Section 1 Overview
Originator Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI), University of Minnesota Duluth
Title Cuyuna Range Natural Iron Ore Mine and Ore Reserve Properties
Abstract The Cuyuna Range Natural Iron Ore Mine and Ore Reserve Properties coverage was generated from documented property descriptions found in mining-related texts in conjunction with production of the Cuyuna Range Underground Mine Features coverages. Data sources are listed in the attribute table.
Purpose To digitally compile and map documented underground mining features of the Cuyuna Range for analysis and evaluation of potential use in energy storage and related monitoring and land use planning. Mapping of the Cuyuna Range underground mining features was done in accordance with the standards established during the mapping of the Mesabi Range underground mining features by the MN Department of Natural Resources Division of Lands and Minerals.

Section 2 Data Quality
Attribute Accuracy Source table cuyuna_underground_mineproperties.dbf is derived primarily from the 2005 Skillings Mining Review Minnesota Mining Directory, Westmorelandflint Publishing, Duluth, MN, 193 p. for mine properties and from Beltrame, R.J., 1977, Directory of Information on Cuyuna Range Geology and Mining: Minnesota Geological Survey, Information Circular 13, 52 p. for ore reserve properties. Additional source documents are listed in the attribute table.
Logical Consistency
Completeness Includes all found documented natural iron ore underground mine properties and ore reserves on the Cuyuna Iron Range.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Parcel corners were digitized to the MN DNR pls_fortypy3.shp coverage for Crow Wing County.
Vertical Positional Accuracy Not applicable.
Lineage Cuyuna Range mine parcels were obtained primarily from the 2005 Skillings Mining Review Minnesota Mining Directory, Westmorelandflint Publishing, Duluth, MN, 193 p.; additional sources are listed in the attribute table. Cuyuna Range ore reserve parcels were obtained primarily from Beltrame, R.J., 1977, Directory of Information on Cuyuna Range Geology and Mining: Minnesota Geological Survey, Information Circular 13, 52 p., as well as from documents stored in data files at the Minnesota Department of Revenue Minerals Tax Office in Eveleth.
Parcel corners were digitized to the MN DNR pls_fortypy3.shp coverage for Crow Wing County. Property boundaries of underground mine parcels are drawn as of when the mining took place. This has resulted in instances of overlap with subsequent open pit mine parcel boundaries (e.g.: Thompson underground mine and Portsmouth open pit mine). Data search for mine and ore reserve parcels took place from 2013 to 2015.
