Title Cuyuna Range Underground Mine Shafts
Abstract The Cuyuna Range Underground Mine Shafts data layer contains documented mine shafts on the Cuyuna Range that were digitized from geo-rectified mine maps.
Purpose To digitally compile and map documented underground mining features of the Cuyuna Range for analysis and evaluation of potential use in energy storage and related monitoring and land use planning. Mapping of the Cuyuna Range underground mining features was done in accordance with the standards established during the mapping of the Mesabi Range underground mining features by the MN Department of Natural Resources Division of Lands and Minerals.

Currentness Reference 1905 - 1967: Time period during which underground mining took place on the Cuyuna Range, beginning with the sinking of the Hobart Shaft and development of several hundred feet of crosscuts at the Sigma mine on the Cuyuna South Range in 1905-1906 and ending with the cessation of underground mining activities at the Armour No. 2 mine on the Cuyuna North Range in 1967.

Attribute Accuracy Source table cuyuna_underground_shaftspt.dbf is derived from all found mine maps and all found historic documentation.
Logical Consistency
Completeness Includes all found documented natural iron ore underground mine shafts on the Cuyuna Iron Range. This does not preclude the existence of additional or more recent mine maps that may indicate the presence of more shafts. (e.g., Croft mine is 630 feet deep. Maps for levels below the 333-foot level were not acquired.)
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Can vary up to 100 feet (30.5 meters); however, within any given mine, integrity was maintained as features were mapped on a 1" = 100' or 1" = 200' mine grid.
Vertical Positional Accuracy Elevations in data sets were taken from the original mine maps.
Lineage Historical maps depicting underground mine workings were acquired as digital images or as paper/mylar sheets that were scanned via a large format scanner to make digital. Digital images were geo-rectified to survey PLS corners where available with at least 4 control points digitized at a minimum of 1:2000. Where unavailable, other means employed included geo-rectification to smaller-scale geo-referenced maps or NAIP imagery. Since mine maps are typically produced on 100-ft x 100-ft or 200-ft x 200-ft grids aligned to geographic north or to the trend of the orebody, the mine grid was used in conjunction with PLS to maintain integrity within a given mine. Points, polylines and polygons representing shafts, drifts and mined extents were digitized from the geo-referenced mine maps. Drifts were digitized as polylines and converted to polygons for Feature Class mines by buffering the polylines to the extent displayed on the mine maps.
Map acquisition, scanning, geo-rectification and digitization took place from 2013 to 2015. Maps and digital map images were obtained from multiple agencies and companies including MN Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) Division of Lands and Minerals (Hibbing), MNDNR Division of Parks and Trails (CCSRA-Ironton), MN Department of Revenue Minerals Tax Office (Eveleth), Iron Range Research Center (Chisholm), Superior Mineral Resources LLC (Hibbing) and the Office of Surface Mining National Mine Map Repository (Pittsburgh, PA).
