Section 1: Overview

Originator:Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR)

Title: Minnesota Trails: Division of Parks and Trails

Abstract: This dataset consists of a wide variety of trails within Minnesota that are maintained by the DNR Division of Parks and Trails as well as those maintained by Grant-In-Aid-funded trail clubs. In addition, the data include state park roads and campground spurs. Attributes for each trail or road segment include, among other things, trail/road name, an internally used Program-Project Code, and authorized recreational trail uses. The layer file available through the GDRS and Geospatial Commons provides a wide variety of display options that correspond to these descriptive attributes. These data are intended to be used at a scale of 1:24,000 or smaller. This dataset is known to contain some geometry and attribute errors and is not guaranteed to be accurate.

Purpose: This dataset is designed to be used to evaluate and map information regarding general locations and routes followed by the Division of Parks and Trails-administered trails and state park roads, along with trails' current approved recreational uses.

Time Period of Content Date: 05/01/2019

Currentness Reference: Source data were collected from GPS, aerial photograph interpretation, and digitized paper maps between 2003 and the present and is frequently updated and revised. This derived dataset is updated from its source on a weekly basis.

Section 2: Data Quality

Attribute Accuracy: This dataset contains some features that mistakenly have identical or overlapping geometries with conflicting attribute values. Attributes in this dataset are known to contain other invalid or erroneous values as well. We are working to resolve these errors and will continue to send our updates to the GDRS and the Minnesota Geospatial Commons on a continual basis.

Logical Consistency: Data have been tested for common geometry errors. It is known that this dataset contains some features that have identical or overlapping geometries with conflicting attribute values. It is also known that some topology errors exist in the source dataset. We are working to resolve these errors and will continue to send our updates to the GDRS and the Minnesota Geospatial Commons on a continual basis.

Completeness: This dataset includes most Division of Parks and Trails-administered trails, state water trails, and state park roads that have been physically constructed, using the best data available. This dataset excludes trails and roads administered by entities outside the DNR as well as those that are administered by Division of Parks and Trails but that are maintained for snowmobile use, skiing, skate-skiing, or skijoring. Proposed alignments and trail segments not yet built are also excluded. Snowmobile trail data can be found in this Division's Minnesota Snowmobile Trails dataset (https://gisdata.mn.gov/dataset/trans-snowmobile-trails-mn ), and ski trails are described (as yet without linear spatial data) on the DNR Website at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/skiing/index.html .

Horizontal Positional Accuracy: The Division of Parks and Trails strives to represent the locations of features in this dataset within 30 feet of their true location on the ground. Whether this level of accuracy is achieved for each feature depends in part on the age of the data, the method of collection, and the characteristics of the terrain.

Vertical Positional Accuracy: Not Applicable.

Lineage: This dataset is derived and regularly updated from the DNR WHEELS SDE database.
