This data layer depicts Theme 2 of the 2016 Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). It was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The SVI provides an indication of which communities are most likely to need assistance after a natural disaster or harmful human-caused event. Theme 2 is Household Composition and Disability. It takes factors such as age distribution, disability, and family structure into consideration. It is summarized at the US Census Tract level. The SVI may assist planners and project managers in identifying vulnerable communities. End users may prioritize highly vulnerable communities in grant programs and capacity-building projects.
